My Doctor Told Me I Need to Start Strength Training. Now What?
We've noticed a trend at Coastal Strength & Fitness.
More and more people are walking through our doors saying the same thing.
"My doctor told me I need to start strength training."
Sometimes it's because of osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Sometimes it's because of rising blood sugar or prediabetes.
Other times it's high blood pressure, joint pain, high cholesterol, or simply wanting to stay independent as they get older.
The recommendation is becoming more common.
The problem is that many people leave that appointment wondering...
"Okay... but what exactly am I supposed to do?"
You're Not Alone
Most people weren't taught how to strength train.
Walking into a gym can feel overwhelming.
There are dozens of machines.
Free weights everywhere.
People who look like they've been lifting for years.
It's no surprise that many people leave before they even begin.
The good news?
Strength training doesn't have to be complicated to be effective.
What the Guidelines Actually Recommend
For most healthy adults, the goal isn't to spend hours in the gym.
Current recommendations include:
Strength training at least 2 days per week
At least 150 minutes of moderate activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity) each week
Working all the major muscle groups over the course of the week
That might sound like a lot, but it doesn't have to be.
For many people, it can be as simple as:
Monday: Full-body strength workout
Wednesday: 30-minute walk
Friday: Full-body strength workout
Saturday: Another walk or bike ride
Consistency beats perfection every time.
You Don't Need Fancy Exercises
One of the biggest misconceptions is that strength training means Olympic lifts, flipping tires, or exhausting boot camps.
It doesn't.
A simple workout built around movements like:
A pushing exercise
A pulling exercise
A squat or leg exercise
A hip hinge
Carrying something heavy
Core work
can improve strength, balance, muscle mass, bone density, and confidence.
Start Lighter Than You Think
Another common mistake?
Trying to do too much too soon.
Your first goal isn't to get sore.
It's to build the habit.
Learn good technique.
Leave each workout feeling like you could have done a little more.
Your body adapts surprisingly quickly when you give it the chance.
Why Coaching Makes Such a Difference
This is where many people struggle.
Knowing what to do is one thing.
Knowing if you're doing it correctly is another.
Having someone adjust exercises around sore knees, a sensitive back, shoulder pain, or previous injuries can make all the difference.
That's why every workout at Coastal Strength & Fitness is coached.
We teach proper technique.
We help you progress safely.
And we adjust every exercise to your current ability.
Whether you're completely new to exercise or getting back into it after years away, our goal is to make strength training approachable—not intimidating.
If Your Doctor Told You to Start Strength Training...
That's actually great news.
Not because something is wrong.
Because strength training is one of the few things that can improve so many areas of your health at once.
You don't have to become a bodybuilder.
You don't need to spend six days a week in the gym.
You simply need a plan that's appropriate for where you're starting today.
If you're looking for a beginner-friendly gym in Newport News where every workout is coached and designed to help adults build strength safely, we'd love to help.
Schedule a free strategy session, meet with one of our coaches, and we'll show you exactly how to get started.
